About Our Sacraments

In our prayer book we describe sacraments as “outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ…” In other words, in our sacraments we recognize signs of God’s presence with us and at work among us, physical expressions of spiritual realities that are often beyond our seeing. We can catch glimpses of God’s Mystery all around us.

Christians often speak of two sacraments or seven; when they do this they are thinking about particular services of the church such as baptism or marriage. However when we speak of “outward and visible signs,” we are looking at a bigger picture; many things, both in and outside of services, may speak to us of God’s presence and differ from one person to the next.
