Trinity Episcopal Church invites all to a special service and forum on Sunday, May 21 featuring the Rt. Rev. Dr. Todd McGregor, the Bishop of Madagascar. The bishop will preach during the regular worship service at 9:30 a.m. and immediately afterwards, at 10:45 a.m., discuss his mission and ministry in a slide presentation in the Glover Community Room. A brunch will be provided.
Bishop McGregor and his wife the Rev. Dr. Patsy McGregor, who is also an ordained Anglican priest, serve in the Toliara Region of Southern Madagascar, one of the poorest and most unreached places on earth. Their task involves serving and coordinating the Anglican Church in an area the size of Florida. They have been in the mission field since 1991, and they and their family have served in both Kenya and Madagascar. Trinity’s parishioners learned of the McGregor’s mission after reading one of Patsy’s books, Tamana: At Home in Africa in the church’s book club.
“We want to shed light on what modern missionaries do and why they’re still necessary,” says Trinity parishioner Dan Bacon. “From my perspective, the McGregors are amazing people doing amazing work that’s making a significant difference in the lives of needy people.”
The McGregor’s ministry, called People Reaching People, has grown from one church building and eleven worshiping communities in 2006 to over 70 churches and a Cathedral. They serve the people of the region through education programs and economic development aimed at combatting the chronic poverty. The McGregors work with the churches to develop agriculture and animal husbandry businesses to provide financial resources to the parishes. They also teach women business skills and handicrafts to create goods they can bring to market.
Hosting Bishop McGregor is reflective of Trinity’s stance of being a vibrant faith community open and respectful of diversity and of being an Episcopal Church through service in a relevant way. Trinity is committed to fulfilling its long-held role in Newtown of responding to suffering and providing healing to all in need.
The forum is free. Trinity Church is located at 36 Main Street in Newtown.
